Knee / Lower Leg

Knee / Lower Leg

Knee pain refers to pain localised on or around the surrounding area of the knee cap. The most common causes of knee pain can be related to ageing, trauma, or repetitive stresses on the knee.

Common injuries around the knee include ligament sprains, muscle strains, torn cartilage, tendinitis, bursitis, fractures and arthritis. Distal or proximal pain to the knee may also correlate to knee pain if this has lead to an altered gait, placing irregular stresses on the knees.

The ‘Lower leg’ describes the area between the knee and foot. The most common injuries in this region are collectively named ‘shin splints’. Shin splints usually occur due to a repetitive overload, leading to inflammation of the muscles, tendons and boney tissue associated with the tibia.

“If pain continues to persist after a few days or weeks, or for more serious injuries, it is best to see a health care professional to advise you further on appropriate rehabilitation.”
