What exactly are sports rehabilitation/physiotherapy consultations?

These consultations are recommended for you in order to aid with pain relief, healing and rehabilitation of injuries, pain, medical and surgical conditions. They are often recommended for a variety of muscular, joint and nerve conditions that may be the result of injury, illness or disability.Sports Rehab Health and Performance will treat you using a hands-on approach, including a variety of manual treatments. Our clinicians can also give advice on how to alter your lifestyle which can reduce the possibility of further muscular pain and joint problems, thus reducing the risk of reoccurrence, as well as providing you with appropriate rehabilitative exercises.

Is sports rehabilitation/physiotherapy the same as massage?

Within consultations massage techniques will be introduced if it is an applicable treatment to assist you in your recovery however; it is more than a massage.

There are a vast number of soft and deep tissue techniques that can be utilised within a treatment to assist with the movement of joints and mobilisations of tissue structures including myofascial release, muscle energy techniques and cross frictions to name a few. These techniques are applied where applicable to you based on the findings of your assessment and the condition you are suffering with.

What problems can we help with?

There are a wide variety of health conditions and injuries that we can assist with, many of which are in relation to the musculoskeletal system. Please see our ‘injuries we treat’ section for further details on all of the conditions that we can help you with.

What does treatment involve?

Upon arrival and meeting your clinician, we will begin with a full subjective assessment, which is used to collect and search for key information and review your injury to gain an understanding of the condition, pain, and general health and possible mechanism of injury.

An objective assessment (physical examination) will follow that could include an assessment of gait, posture, a physical assessment along with special clinical tests and palpation to discover the clinical signs for pathology rather than just the symptoms. It also gives the clinician the ability to re-assess the progress of the injury as a comparison throughout your treatment and in future follow up sessions.

Following this, the impact of the condition will be reviewed, as well as the patient’s medical history. Together a mutual agreement of goals can be devised, along with a specifically tailored rehabilitation programme.

At Sports Rehab Health and Performance we want to find the root cause of the injury rather then just treating the symptoms or pain alone.

How should I dress?

It is advised that you wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing. Please bear in mind that a clinician will need to visually assess you regarding posture and movement, and will possibly need to move various areas of the body, thus these areas will need to be visible and assessable.

For example for lower back pain it maybe necessary to assess the pelvis region, therefore wearing shorts will be of benefit. Additionally, when the treatments involve manipulation and massage the site of injury may need to be exposed.

How long does a regular session last?

The initial consultation will involve a full assessment with treatment and will last 60 minutes. Follow up appointment times will be advised by your clinician, however they can last between 30-60 minutes depending on your requirements. We have extended consultation times to give to the time you deserve so you can be thoroughly assessed or reviewed, resulting in fewer treatment sessions over time and saving you money.

Is it possible for treatment to be received on the first appointment?

Initial consultations will involve an in-depth assessment, however we will always endeavour to provide a treatment within the initial appointment where possible.

Will I need to see a doctor prior to my consultation?

If a patient is referring themselves and will be paying for their own treatment, a visit to the GP is not necessary before booking an appointment with us.

Will treatment hurt?

There are some occasions where there could be some discomfort. Your clinician will provide you with an overview of what to expect prior, during, and following treatment and the reaction that is expected from the treatment that is being given. You are advised to consult with their clinician immediately if you have any concerns about the treatment.

Can I bring someone with me?

You are welcome to bring a friend/family member with you to act as a chaperone during the treatment. There are some cases where a chaperone is obligatory, such as with under 18’s and young children or a patient with a disability.

What if you are unable to help me?

We are very honest clinicians here and we will keep you informed throughout your treatments of your progress, however if for any reason we are unable to resolve your injury fully, we will discuss and arrange with you the appropriate medical practitioner that you may require a referral to.

If your injury isn’t progressing as expected and we believe further investigation maybe of significant benefit to your recovery, we work closely with Newcastle Clinic and we are able to refer you privately for radiology investigations such as MRIs.
